In an exclusive interview, Alia Bhatt talks about playing a villain in Heart of Stone, sparring with Gal Gadot, and portraying women in ‘strange’ tones.

In her career, Alia Bhatt has completed a full circle. She made her acting debut in Student of the Year (2012), a college comedy by Karan Johar. And now, with the director’s romantic comedy Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, she has produced a success. In addition, she will be making her international debut in Gal Gadot’s Heart of Stone, directed by Tom Harper.

The espionage thriller’s teaser gives the impression that Alia would be portraying the bad guy. Her character Keya Dhawan is on the prowl for the Heart, a type of technical “brahmastra” that may grant her worldly dominion. She is seen in one scene mockingly toasting Gal’s character, and in another, she is pointing a revolver at the camera. This is interestingly Alia’s first appearance on film as a villain.

“Writing, huh, is where a lot of it (playing the villain) comes from. Whatever the path, you just need to commit to it. However, I believe that playing the villain has a lot of meaning and devotion since, in my eyes, I am not the villain. I feel like I’m the good guy. Keya has a rationale and a goal for her passion, want, need, or desire for the Heart. And she holds that to be true. She sees herself as not the villain. As an actor, you must thus totally commit to that moment. I believe it’s important to clearly and concisely present both of her views, Alia said in an exclusive interview with Hindustan Times.

But Alia also said that having fun while playing Keya wasn’t mandatory. Naturally, there are those in-between times when she’s being sarcastic and using her sarcasm a little too much, which is fantastic. The text includes it by design. It’s also my first time, too. Therefore, I had a great time savoring those moments, Alia stated.

empowering females

There are sisterly moments in Heart of Stone as well. Off-screen, Alia and Gal are clearly friends since Gal has been supporting Alia as she breaks into a new market, just as the Wonder Woman actress did in the past. Gal says she feels awful for males who would never have what she does in a key sequence in the movie: “Someone watching your back.”

Darlings, another movie that encouraged sisterhood, was Alia’s first production as a producer under her label Eternal Sunshine Productions. Shefali Shah and Alia connect as mother and daughter in the dark comedy by Jasmeet K Reen that debuted on Netflix India nearly exactly a year ago, as they are shown putting her wife-beating husband in his place.

Alia’s Vision for Inclusive Filmmaking

Alia maintained, however, that in her capacity as a producer, she would want to work on projects that promote not just sisterhood but also peace of any type between the sexes. Of course, I want to share tales of women supporting one another. But I also want to share tales of guys supporting one another. I wish to share tales of individuals helping one another. It shouldn’t be reserved for a single gender. It should only include various individuals, their own travels, and their coming together. We want to produce movie that is really on an equal footing. So, in my opinion, it shouldn’t be biased in favor of any one party in particular,” Alia remarked.

She supports portraying female characters in new ways, nevertheless. “I definitely think there is merit in showing women in unexpected shades,” Alia said. Watching two ladies battle it out and outwit one another is far more enjoyable. Of course, such interactions are much more fascinating than watching them chat over lunch. You may have fun playing with those items. However, I believe that both should be balanced.

Heart of Stone will premiere on Netflix this Friday on August 11.
