Since 1971, UEFA has organised and run the UEFA Europa League, formerly known as the UEFA Cup, as an annual competition. Clubs worldwide are qualified based on their performance in their respective leagues and cup competitions.

According to the 2014–15 rule changes, winners of the Europa League automatically advance to the UEFA Super Cup and the UEFA Champions League tournament the following season.

Europa League History
The Inter-Cities Cup began in 1955 and ran until 1971. It was when the UEFA Cup eventually took its place.
Eleven nations participated in the Inter-Cities’ inaugural competition. However, the number of teams rose to 64 as it gained popularity and developed.
When the UEFA Cup was first played in the 1971–72 season, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Tottenham Hotspur faced off in an all-English team final. In a two-leg final, Spurs made history by winning the inaugural competition 3-2 overall.
Europa League Games Format
Over the past few years, there have been significant changes to the Europa League qualifying process. The countries are ranked by UEFA using statistics known as UEFA coefficients. An association number is used to identify these countries.
1st Qualification Round
Under associations 24–54, 31 clubs with domestic cup victories advance to the first round of qualifying. 35 such clubs are also eligible in Associations 18–53 and 16–51.
2nd Qualification Round
In addition to the teams that qualified from the first round, there are six domestic cup winners from associations 18–23, two domestic league winners from 16–17, and six domestic league fourth-place teams from 10–15 for the second qualification round.
3rd Qualification Round
Five domestic cup winners from associations 13–17, nine domestic league third-place teams from associations 7–15, five domestic league fourth-place teams from associations 5–9, three domestic league fifth-place teams from associations 4–6 (France’s League Cup winners), and three domestic league sixth-place teams from associations 1–3 (England’s League Cup winners) are also included in the winners of the second qualification round.
Playoff Round
The fifteen teams that have advanced from the UEFA Champions League’s losing third qualification round are joined by the winners of the third qualifying round in the play-off round.
Group Stage
Twelve domestic cup winners from associations 1–12, one domestic league fourth-place team from association 4, and three domestic league fifth-place teams from associations 1–3 are joined in the group stage by the playoff winners. In addition, ten teams that were eliminated in the UCL playoffs are eligible.
Knockout Stage
There are 32 teams in the knockout stage, 12 of which are the group winners and another 12 are the runners-up. Eight of the Champions League group stage’s third-place teams advance as well.

Europa League Current Scenario
The 2021–22 Europa League was an exciting season to watch, as German team Eintracht Frankfurt overcame all obstacles to win the title of new Europa League champions. The German team had previously won the Europa title in 1980, so this was their second time winning it. Rangers FC, who were very motivated and had a fantastic run of Europa League performances, lost to Frankfurt.
The knockout stages featured a number of elite teams, including FC Barcelona, Sevilla, West Ham United, RB Leipzig, and many more. In the second leg at the legendary Camp Nou, Frankfurt pulled off an amazing comeback, ending the mighty Barca’s campaign. Both RB Leipzig and West Ham United made it to the competition’s semifinals. However, Rangers and Frankfurt defeated these two teams, respectively.
