Jelena Ostapenko advances to Rome quarterfinals for the third time

Jelena Ostapenko from Latvia did an amazing job at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome. She saved 7 out of 10 break points and won a tough match against Daria Kasatkina, the 8th seed. This victory pushed Ostapenko into the quarterfinals. It’s the third time she has reached this stage in Rome, having done so before in 2018 and 2021.

After losing the second set, Ostapenko made a strong comeback in the third set, dominating her opponent in just 29 minutes. She broke Kasatkina’s serve three times and won more than half of her return points. Kasatkina struggled, making seven double faults and only one ace.

Ostapenko’s next opponent in the quarterfinals will depend on the match between Paula Badosa from Spain and Karolina Muchova from the Czech Republic, both of whom are unseeded players. However, the match is scheduled for Monday night, pending better weather conditions.

On the other hand, Elena Rybakina from Kazakhstan, the 7th seed, showed her dominance by winning convincingly against Marketa Vondrousova from the Czech Republic, with a score of 6-3, 6-3. Rybakina impressed with her strong first-serve performance, winning 73 percent of those points. She also had a significant advantage in aces and winners compared to her opponent.

Rybakina’s quarterfinal opponent will depend on the outcome of the match between the top-seeded Iga Swiatek from Poland and Croatia’s 21st seed, Donna Vekic. Both players are eagerly waiting for better weather conditions, hoping the rain stops.

Unfortunately, Madison Keys from the United States, the 19th seed, had to end her journey in Rome as Anhelina Kalinina from Ukraine, the 30th seed, made an impressive comeback to win 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. This victory extended Kalinina’s perfect record against Keys to 3-0.

Kalinina attributed her success to her focused approach, taking each point as it came, especially considering Keys’ strong start in the match. Kalinina is now preparing to face Beatriz Haddad Maia from Brazil, the 12th seed, who won easily against Colombian qualifier Camila Osorio.

In another exciting match, Veronika Kudermetova from Russia, the 11th seed, showed her dominance with a commanding 6-2, 6-2 victory over Marie Bouzkova from the Czech Republic, the 27th seed. Kudermetova’s excellent serving skills played a big part in her win, with an impressive 85.2 percent success rate on her first serves. The match was wrapped up in just 79 minutes.

Kudermetova’s quarter final opponent will be Qinwen Zheng, the 22nd seed, who won a hard-fought all-Chinese battle against Xiyu Wang, with a final score of 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
